The FHS Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, Concert Choir and Jazz Choir will all wear concert black attire. In order to look professional, a set of guidelines has been established. The mandatory attire is as follows:
Shoes: any black dress shoe is allowed, but please be sure that it is a dress shoe and not just a sandal, boot, etc. Be certain that the entire shoe is completely black; that is, no cork bottoms, colored designs, or any other dark colors. To be professional, please wear skin color pantyhose with skirts, and black socks or black trouser socks with pants.
Bottoms: a long skirt or pair of dress pants is required. No skirt
should be above the knee. This is necessary considering that we
all sit on a stage that is above the audience, and also it is professional
looking. If pants are worn, they should be nice black dress pants,
not jeans. They should be the kind of pants a business professional
might wear to the office.
Tops: a nice, three-quarter sleeve or long sleeve black top is appropriate.
We understand that it is hot sometimes, especially during Pops,
but keep in mind that the men are wearing long sleeved dress shirts
and jackets.
No tank tops should be
worn. There should be absolutely no stomach, cleavage,
back, or other unnecessary skin shown. Therefore, make sure that
shirts are long enough, bottoms are high enough, and the neckline
is modest enough.
Please wear black suits with black socks and black dress shoes. Wear a long sleeve white dress shirt with long tie.
White socks are absolutely inappropriate. Concert attire should be totally black; thus, navy blue, dark gray, gray, dark brown, or any other dark color is unacceptable.
Keep in mind that these are Performing Ensembles, not a fashion show, and people should not be paying attention to what people are wearing, but the MUSIC. Similar dress ensures that the Performing Ensembles look professional on stage, and each concert is only a couple of hours long at the most. Express your individual style in any way outside of this time, but please follow these guidelines for concerts. It would be a good idea to start making sure you have the correct clothing for concerts in the early fall so you don't have to rush around the day before or the day of the first concert. Remember, we want to look as professional as possible (ie. Boston Symphony Orchestra).
